Suggestions for Managing Stage Fright…

Preparation for a performance can often be a source of excitement and/or utter fear for the performer.  In the weeks and days leading up to a performance here are some basics to remember.

1. Preparation is key- The better you prepare yourself the more likely you will able to minimize any performance errors due to nerves.

2. Record yourself during rehearsals. Sometimes the pressure of recording yourself can simulate some of the feelings you may have before a performance.  Recording yourself playing a  complete run through of your selections  will help you to more accurately discern which sections of your performance require extra attention.

3. Practice memorizing your music.  Committing the music to memory cuts down on your need to rely on sheet music which also allows you to focus on internalizing the music rather than just reading it.

4. Practice performing with a small audience prior to the actual performance. This can be your parents, siblings, neighbors, etc.

5. Engage in a pre-performance routine to help quell any nerves. I once heard that Luther Vandross took naps before a show. Find what works for you.

With these helpful tools you can better manage any feelings of stage fright.
